All-American Chinese School Brush Painting and Calligraphy Competition

April 15, 2006

Objective: To promote the awareness and preservation of the traditional arts of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy.

Eligibility: All students, except adult classes, currently enrolled in Chinese Schools, private Art Classes, Art Studios, and colleges are eligible.  Students who are not registered in any classes could submit their artworks for demonstration only but not for competition.  The competition is divided into four age groups: A: Age 9 and under, B: age 10 to 13, and C: age 14 to 17, and D: age 18 to 21.  Each student can submit two pieces of either brush painting or calligraphy, or both, total up to four pieces per student if both brush painting and calligraphy works are included. 

Requirements:

1.  The art work should be produced by the student himself.  Xerox copy or tracing of existing arts or calligraphy is not acceptable.
2.  Use Chinese rice paper only.  The minimum size is 11x17 inches. No maximum size limitation.
3. Student should write their Chinese names on the front corner.

4.   On the back side of each piece, attach a small piece of paper with the following information: student’s name (both Chinese and English), date of birth, age group, telephone/fax number/Email address, name of the Chinese school enrolled (in both Chinese and English), the signature of the school principal (except Group D), the name, address, Email, and the phone number of contact person, and whether this piece needs to be returned ($5 per piece handling fee.)
5. There is no entry fee.  A $5 handling fee will be charged for each piece that needs to be returned. Otherwise, the returning of the artwork is not guaranteed. All the winners’ artworks will be returned regardless whether a $5 fee is paid or not.

6.  (Except Group D) The artworks should be collected and sent by the school. A list of the participants (names in both Chinese and English, and their ages), the phone/fax/Email numbers and mailing address of the contact person from each school should be provided.


Awards:   Three Gold, three Silver, three Bronze prizes will be awarded to each group. In addition, the brush painting B group (age 10-13) will have additional three Honor awards due to the large number of contestants in that age group. All winners will receive award certificates.  In addition, each Gold prizewinner will receive $50 in cash. As a part of the prize, the winners’ artworks will be silk mounted and exhibited at libraries and schools around the metropolitan Boston area. It will also be displayed on our website at www.ChinesePerformingArts.net. The winning piece will be returned via certified mail after the exhibitions.

Deadline for submission: All of the artworks have to arrive at the Foundation before April 15, 2006.  It will be exhibited from April 22 to May 9, 2005, in the auditorium of the Chinese Culture Center (65 Harrison Ave. 6 Floor, Boston). The judgment will take place on Saturday morning, April 22, 2006. The results will be announced immediately.

Mr. Tung Wu: Former Director of Asiatic Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
Calligrapher, art critic, and juror of professional art competitions.

Dr. Doris Chu: President of the former International Society.
Art critics and juror of professional art competitions.

Prof. Wai-Fong Loh: Former professor of Chinese History at Harvard.
Poet, writer, and art collector.

Prof. Qian-Shen Bai: Professor of Chinese Art and History at Boston University.
Professional calligrapher.

Mrs. Hui-Liang Lee Chang: Professional Chinese brush painter and calligrapher.

Mr. Qingxiong Ma: Professional Chinese brush painter and calligrapher.

Mr. Yu-Sing Jung: renowned architect and calligrapher

While all the necessary precautions were taken to prevent any damage to the art works submitted, we are not responsible for any unintentional losses.
