Meet the artists:


Marvel Ang will be a junior at the Boston University Academy in September, 2004. He took dulcimer lessons with Mr. Zhang Zheng Tian and later Ms. Ping Li, the principal dulcimer player of the China Central National Orchestra of Traditional Music of Beijing. It is under her guidance and expectation that Marvel achieves his present level of performance. In 2002, Marvel visited Beijing, China and played at the China Music University and for the Presidents of the International Dulcimer Association and Beijing Dulcimer Association. Both gave Marvel very high commendation. Marvel has appeared frequently at various community events receiving high remarks.

Sophie Hsuan-Fong Chen, 16, from Taiwan will be a tenth grader at Walnut Hill School this September. She was the first prize winner of the 2003 National Oboe Competition in Taiwan among many other honors. Earlier this year, she was one of the few to play in a master class for Mr. Albert Mayer, the principal oboist of Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and was praised by him as “…one with star quality.”

Tzu-Yin Chou, 15, was the 2nd prize winner of the Taiwan Baroque Viola Music Competition. She is the principal violist of the Taipei County Youth Orchestra and has toured Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Jenny Ding, 15, is a sophomore at the Central High School, Philadelphia. She has been studying with Mr. Meng-Chieh Liu since the age of eight. She had a solo appearance at the Rock Hall of the Temple University and also awarded scholarship from the University’s Music Prep Division.

Timothy Dinh, 13, will be a freshman at Cherry Hill High School, New Jersey. He is a student of Mr. Meng-Chieh Liu.

Ling-Ju, Kuo, from Taiwan, has won numerous awards as a pianist and horn player. She was a three-time champion at the Taipei City horn competition and a prize-winner at the Taipei County Piano Competitions. During college, she was active as a soloist, accompanist and an orchestral player. She premiered many compositions and frequently performed at the National Concert Hall in Taipei. She is currently studying as a master degree candidate under Prof. Lin Ming-Hui at the Normal University.

Rudy Nai-Hua Kuo, 15, from Taiwan, was the first prize winner of the 2003 Taiwan Rong-Guan Violin Competition.

Caroline Liao, 16, was the first prize winners of both the 2001 and 2003 National Taiwan Clarinet Competitions. She is double majoring in clarinet and piano.

Po-Yao Lin, 15, was a prize winner of the Taipei City Violin Competition. He studied both violin and piano for over ten years.

Yu-Cheng Lin, 19, is a sophomore at National Taiwan Normal University, majoring in piano and minoring in erhu. She was the first prize winner of the youth division in 2002 National Erhu Competition in Taiwan. She performed at New York’s Lincoln Center with the Wind-South Chinese Music Chamber Ensemble in 2001.

Pi-Hsun Shih* (guest artist)
Pi-Hsun Shih is currently a member of the piano faculty at Hartt School, Community Division and the Center for Creative Youth at Wesleyan University. She is the pianist of the New World Trio, the chamber group in residence at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Connecticut.

Yu-Chen Shih , from Taiwan, is in the second year of Master’s Degree in Piano Performance under the guidance of Paul Rutman at Hartt School. She is also a member of the “Performance of 20/20”—an honor program for exceptionally talented instrumentalists. As the winner of both the “Miami String Quartet Competition” and “Paranov Concerto Competition”, Ms. Shih has performed Schumann’s Piano Quintet in Eb Major with the Miami String Quartet in the winner’s concert in March, 2004, and will perform Ravel’s Piano concerto in G Major with the Hartt School Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Zimmerman on October 1st.

David Ta-Wei Tsai, 15, just graduated from the Preparatory Junior High School of the National Taiwan Normal University under the guidance of Rolf-Peter Wille. In 2003, he appeared with the university’s orchestra as the soloist performing Weber’s Concertino Op. 79.

Li-Hua Tseng received her BA from the National Taiwan Normal University majoring in cello. She is a member of the Taipei City Symphony Orchestra and teaches full time at Hsinchu High School in Taiwan.

Evan Wong, 14, is currently studying at the Preparatory High School of Taiwan
National Normal University under the tutelage of Rolf-Peter Wille. He has
performed at Wen-Hwa University and the National Normal University. This year, he participated in the 5th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. He was an active participant at the 2002 Graz Summer Festival in Austria where he studied under Professors Hoffer and Voike.

Chia-Chi Yen, 13, received honor award in 2003 National Piano Competition in Taiwan. She is double majoring in piano and violin.

The Concerts and Master Classes :listed are presented by the faculty members (see below), guest artisits, and students of the 13th Annual Music Festival at Walnut Hill, organized by the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts. This three-week program provides a rare opportunity for talented young musicians to learn directly from world-renowned masters on a one-on-one basis. It takes place every summer in August at Walnut Hill School, Natick, MA.
