Andreas Rothchild,  cellist

Andreas teaches creative writing at the Harvard Extension School -- A graduate of Harvard College, Andreas Rothchild has been trained at Longy and the Eastman School of Music, studying with George Seaman, Jonathan Miller, and, most recently, Rhonda Rider, for whom he serves as a teaching assistant at Boston Conservatory. A recipient of the David McCord Prize for musical excellence at Harvard, Andreas has played under Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood Institute, and has held principal positions in the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra and the Longy Chamber Orchestra. He has participated in master classes with Menahem Pressler, Eugene Lainer and David Deveau, and performs as a chamber musician and freelance cellist in the Boston area.

Hailed as "delightful and accomplished" by Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe and “first among near equals” by Bay Windows, cellist Andreas Rothchild is an active soloist and chamber musician. He has appeared frequently in such venues as Jordan Hall, the Goethe Institute, and live on WGBH radio. He has performed extensively the cello duo repertoire with NEC pianist Sarah Takagi, and has also been a guest artist of the Boston Chamber Music Society, collaborating with Randall Hodgkinson and Tom Hill. An avid proponent of new music, he has premiered works by David Horne, Florentine Mulsant, and Eric Sawyer, and has recently recorded Mr. Sawyer's Duo "Pas de Deux" with violinist Francine Trester for an upcoming Albany Records CD release.

Mr. Rothchild received the bachelor of arts degree with high honors in English Literature from Harvard University, where he was a recipient of the David McCord Prize for musical excellence and the Thomas T. Hoopes prize for outstanding scholarship. He has also studied at the Eastman School of Music and the Longy School of Music. His teachers include George Seaman, Jonathan Miller, Kim Scholes, and Rhonda Rider. He has served two summers on the faculty of the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts, and is a member of the faculty of the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, where he teaches cello and coaches chamber music.
