Kevin Shih-Kai Lin, violinist

Violinist Shih-Kai Lin was the first prize and audience choice award winner of the 2006 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Young Artist Competition; leading to his debut with the Houston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Hans Graf and Rebecca Miller. He also won the third prize of the 2009 Schadt Violin Competition.

In 2007, Mr. Lin represented the Juilliard School with his string trio in the John F. Kenney Center Conservatory Project Concert Series. He also made his concerto debut at the Aspen Music Festival with the Sinfonia Orchestra under the baton of Xian Zhang. In 2008, he performed the Bach double violin concerto with Cho-Liang Lin in Taiwan.

A fellowship was granted to Mr. Lin from the Aspen Music Festival, 2003 to 2007. Mr. Lin received the scholarship as an “outstanding musician” from the Chi-Mei Cultural Foundation of Taiwan in 2004, and 2006. The Young Musical Scholars Foundation also awarded scholarship for his outstanding musical and academic achievements in 2005.

Mr. Lin has won numerous awards and scholarships including the first prize in the Quincy Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, second prize in the Brockton Symphony Concerto Competition and a scholarship from the Boston Musical Society as a noted young talented musician.

Mr. Lin earned the Advance Certificate with Distinction from The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in England in 2000. He won Honorable Mention in the Boston Symphony 2001 Youth Concerto Competition. He was also the recipient of the Yale Book Award for outstanding personal character and intellectual promise as well as being admitted to the fellowship of the Cum Laude Society at Walnut Hill School of the Arts.

Mr. Lin has given concerts in the U.S. Canada, and Taiwan. As a chamber musician, Mr. Lin has toured with the International Sejong Soloists and he has performed in venues such as Alice Tully Hall, the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center, and Jordan Hall. Mr. Lin has coached with Earl Carlyss, Joseph Kalichstein, Paul Neubauer, Silvia Rosenberg, James Dunham, and Michael Tree. As an orchestral player, Mr. Lin has served as the concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra and the assistant concertmaster of the Aspen Chamber Symphony. Mr. Lin has performed in the master classes of Gil Shaham, Victor Pikayzen, and Matsuko Ushioda. Mr. Lin has participated in several prestigious festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival, the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival, and the La Jolla SummerFest.

Mr. Lin came to the United States in 1999 to Walnut Hill School of the Arts in Natick, Massachusetts, where he studied with Marylou Speaker Churchill. Mr. Lin graduated from Walnut Hill School with high honors and was the recipient of the Frances B. Lanier award from the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. Mr. Lin was born in Taiwan and started his musical studies at the age of four. He holds both the Bachelor and Master degrees from the Juilliard School under tutelage of Naoko Tanaka and Cho- Liang Lin. In the Fall of 2010, Mr. Lin will begin his doctoral studies at the New England Conservatory with Miriam Fried.
