Yang
Yong was born in Beijing, China. He began his music studies at the
Central Conservatory
of Music in Beijing. And later on he continued his studies at the
University of Pittsburgh, and finally receiving his Ph.D. in composition
and theory in 1995 from Brandeis University. His earliest childhood
musical influences stem from Peking Opera, folk melodies, and many kinds
of folk stories told in China. These experiences made a strong impact
on his future education and professional career.
Yang Yong is currently a professor of composition and theory at the
Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. His compositions have been
honored by many awards nationally and internationally, including several
ASCAP Standard Awards, the first prizes for the International Award for
Musical Composition Ciutat de Tarragona in Spain, the Valentino Bucchi
Prize in Rome, Italy, the Washington International Composition, ALEA III
International Composition Competition, among others. He also received
supports from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Music
Center,Meet the Composer, Radio Vara in Netherlands, Massachusetts
Cultural Council, among others. Yang’s orchestra works have been
performed in the United States and worldwide by the Deutsches Symphonie-
Orchester Berlin, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, China National Symphony
Orchestra, the Central Opera Symphony Orchestra in China, the Boston
Modern Orchestra Project, Hong Kong Philharmonic, San Jose Symphony,
Dniprogetrovsk Symphony Orchestra in Ukraine. His chamber works have
received performances by the chamber groups of Berlin Philharmonic,
Nieuw Ensemble, die reihe ensemble, Sydney Alpha Ensemble, Parnassus,
the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, Korean Chamber Ensemble, 4Plus
Percussion in Korea, the Amelia Piano Trio, NEC Percussion Ensemble and
many Chinese traditional instrumental virtuosos. His music theory
writing: Counterpoint in two volumes has been reprinted several times
and are the bestsellers in this field in China.
