Zenan
Yu, an accomplished pianist, was born in China. He studied with E-lin
Chen at the Central Conservatory of Music, and at the age of fifteen he
performed Rachmaninoff‘s twenty-four preludes as his debut recital. He
has performed in numerous cities in the U.S. including New York,
Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Boston, and New Haven. While in
China, Mr. Yu has been a concerto soloist with many orchestras including
the China Philharmonic Orchestra under Long Yu, the Central Conservatory
Symphony Orchestra under Yongyan Hu, and the Beijing Youth Symphony
Orchestra under En Shao. He also gave recitals in Beijing, Tianjin,
Shanghai, Xiamen, Tsingtao, Ningbo, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong. In 2002,
Zenan Yu performed at The Grea Hall of The People for the former
president Jiang Zemin and other leaders of China. In August 2007, he
performed in Tianeman Square for over 50,000 people.
In 2007, he traveled to the U.S to become a student of Russell Sherman
and Wha Kyung Byun at the New England Conservatory. He has been awarded
the Dorothy Hinton Congleton Memorial Presidential Scholarship for three
years. In his freshman year, Mr. Yu won the NEC piano concerto
competition and performed Tchaikovsky piano concerto No. 1 with the NEC
symphony orchestra under Guillermo Figueroa at Boston’s Jordan Hall. He
was one of pianists to perform Messiaen’s Vingt Regards Sur Lenfant
Jesus at Jordan Hall in the 2008 Messiaen festival in Boston. In
addition, Mr. Yu was also invited to play a recital in Los Angles as
part of the celebration of the 200th Anniversary of Haydn’s death. This
recital was broadcasted by 88.5 KCSN. In 2008, Zenan Yu substituted at
the last minute for an injured pianist in performances of Rachmaninoff
piano concerto No. 2, which he learned within one week, with the Concord
Symphony. After the performances, the conductor Richard Pittman invited
him to play Liszt piano concerto No. 2 for the opening series of the
2009-2010 season.
