An Evening of Brahms:
with pianist Anton Nel and cellist Bion Tsang

Pianist Anton Nel was the 1st prize winner of the 1987 Naumburg International Piano Competition and the 1st prizes winner of all the major South African competitions. A student of Adolph Hallis, he made his European debut in France in 1982, and in the same year graduated with highest distinction from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He attended the University of Cincinnati, where he pursued his Master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees under Bela Siki and Frank Weinstock. He was a top prizewinner at the 1984 Leeds International Piano Competition. He was appointed to the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin at the age of 23, followed by professorships at the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Michigan, where he was chairman of the piano department. In September 2000, Anton Nel was appointed as the Priscilla Pond Flawn Regents Distinguished Professor of Piano and Chamber music at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2001 he was appointed Visiting "Extraordinary" Professor at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

Cellist Bion Tsang (
章雨亭) has been internationally recognized as one of the outstanding instrumentalists of his generation: among his many honors are an Avery Fisher Career Grant, an MEF Career Grant and the Bronze Medal in the IX International Tchaikovsky Competition. He was featured on America Online as CultureFinder’s “Star Find of the Week,” on the Internet Cello Society as “Artist of the Month,” and in the newly published book 21st Century Cellists. He made his professional debut at age 11 in two concerts with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic. He returned to perform two more concerts with Maestro Mehta and the Philharmonic, and one of these performances was broadcast worldwide on the CBS Festival of Lively Arts TV series. He was the youngest cellist to receive a Gregor Piatigorsky Memorial Prize and the youngest recipient ever of an Artists International Award. He was also a Finalist of the NFAA’s Arts Recognition and Talent Search and subsequently as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. At 19, he became the youngest cellist to win a prize in the VIII International Tchaikovsky Competition. He entered the Juilliard School at age eight and received his BA from Harvard and his Master of Musical Arts from Yale. He is on the music faculty of The University of Texas at Austin, where he was the recipient of the 2004 Texas Exes Teaching Award after just one year of service.

大提琴家章雨亭及名鋼琴家Anton Nel 聯合演出: 布拉姆斯之夜

大提琴家章雨亭及名鋼琴家Anton Nel , 應中華表演藝術基金會之邀請 , 將於四月五日星期六晚八時 , 假紐英崙音樂學院喬登廳 (Jordan Hall) , 演出布拉姆斯作品: E小調第38號及F大調99號奏鳴曲 , 及由章雨亭將原著小提琴改編成大提琴及鋼琴的第1, 2, 4, 5號匈牙利舞曲 。WGBH 89.7 FM己請兩位音樂家在四月四日(星期五下年三時)到電台演奏作實況轉墦 。將是場精采可期的音樂饗宴 , 請勿錯過 。

章雨亭為聞名世界的大提琴家 , 經常受邀於全球各地演出 , 廣受各地愛樂人士的喜愛 。他曾獲Avery Fisher 及MEF成就獎 , 同時亦是第九屆柴可夫司基大賽銅牌獎的得主 。章雨亭自小即展現超凡的音樂天賦 , 八歲進入朱麗亞音樂學院學習、十一歲時就和名指揮Zubin Mehta合作 , 並與紐約愛樂交響樂團同台演出 。該場演出由CBS電視台作現場全球實況轉播 。章雨亭擁有哈佛的學士及耶魯大學的音樂碩士 。目前任教於德州大學Austin分校 , 曾獲2004年德州最佳教師獎 。
