Preface for 3/21/2020 concert “Autumn Water”
by Waifong Loh

Reflections on Water

Water has been a fascinating topic ever since antiquity. Genesis starts with “the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” before God created light. The Greeks consider water as the origin of all things.

In many cultures, the word marine (sea or water) and the word mother (ma) sharing the same phonation could not be coincidental. The word leviathan evokes destructions and creations, chaos and order at the same time. Babylonian creation mythology starts with the struggle between Marduk (the storm god) and a pair of sea god and goddess (Apsu and Tiamat). It was the body of the sea goddess Tiamat that was split and turned into heaven and earth.

In 1993, excavation in Hubei found a mid-fourth century B.C. document (on bamboo slips) that declares “Taiyi
太一 (original Singularity? ) gave birth to water, and water complemented Taiyi and gave birth to heaven. Heaven complemented Taiyi and gave birth to earth.”

In Chinese (Taoist) philosophy, it is water that flows, fills, swirls, and floods. It is water that changes and shapes all beings quietly and stormily. It is water that creates and describes nature itself.

It takes more than arts, words and music to help us to understand human fascination of water.
